At TMG Designs, we believe that true quality reveals itself under pressure—and fire. That’s why we put our custom-designed windows to the ultimate test: a fire resistance assessment conducted at none other than the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria.
Setting the Scene: A First for the CSIR
Although the CSIR is renowned for its cutting-edge research and testing facilities, this was the first time their team had ever tested a window for fire resistance. The process wasn’t just plug-and-play. Builders were brought in to construct a custom brick wall directly into the testing rig, creating a realistic installation environment for our two window samples.
Once the wall was up and the windows were fixed into place, the countdown to testing began.
Under the Heat: The Test Protocol
On test day, a dedicated team of four from the CSIR was on site:
- Two inspectors positioned at the front of the rig to photograph and document the test in real-time.
- Two technicians managing the furnace, ramping it up to a blistering 850°C for 30 minutes, as required by law.
This was no ordinary quality check—it was a legally regulated, scientific-grade assessment, conducted with the highest precision.
Once the test was complete and the windows removed, the temporary brick wall was dismantled, marking the end of a rigorous and rewarding trial.
